Disco Blanco - the Saudi grill will indeed help as it enlarges the cross section of the air flow path, would help at all speeds. Kind of like taking off the grille on your home AC, the flow increases.

The mechanical fan uses more horsepower, and moves more air. If you assume it used say 3 horse power, an equal electric motor draws a lot of amps and would be big. The mechanical fan also helps some when driving, the electric fan is zip while underway.

If you want a cheap increase in air flow - under $20 at salvage yard - 2001 Chevy blazer fan and clutch - uses same mount on water pump

You know....that looks exactly like the fan in the GMC Safari. I helped my brother-in-law replace the fan clutch and fan assembly. Very interesting.....

You need to look at the center where the fan bolts onto the clutch. It is not made from metal...which I first thought, its made of plastic. If you see no cracks, then you should be okay...but overtime, the plastic center section will eventually crack and fly off. I've seen a few of those do that....

I like the ideal of replacing the fan assembly and "strapping on" a system. I did a single system way back and it was straight forward. A dual system should be ideal for LR's. Jeg's, Summit, etc...has all the parts you need to do the job. Just waiting for someone to post that they did it.....already....

 

VCG - in the case of the electric fan vs viscous, underway at say 45 mph, the viscous still is turning with 20 - 40% power coupling, or more, depending on clutch. The electric fan thermostat will have it shutdown. So the mechanical fan is still pumping air. It does not make as much as the outside air flow, but it is there. On my D1, it makes 6-10 degrees difference at 55 mph vs stock fan and stock clutch. I've swapped them and made the same boring trip at the same 55 mph several times.

WG - the center on this one is metal, but thanks for the tip. I also tried one that was from a 98 GMC pickup, it was black plastic, different blade design, but metal center also.

The point I was trying to make is that used Chevy parts, which are widely available, might do in a pinch for a Rover. A slow moving Rover, in the sand, on the rocks, climbing the trail - it needs all the cooling it can find.

Pix added of same - BTW, the paint mark is added by the salvage yard to identify parts when you are returning for credit, etc. So if you have "newer" looking parts, with paint on them, the previous owner has been "shopping" with a wrench.

 

My thoughts as well. The LS1 fans on the s-10 keep it 15-20 degrees cooler at all speeds versus the stock clutch fan which happens to the GM 4.3 unit. E fans or the 4.3 fan swap will outperform the factory Rover setup though so when changing from stock you can't really lose.

 

just had the h20 pump take a powder in my '04 DII.

I replaced the pump, and noticed the blades of the fan, have seen better days. Googling for a cheap (we're freaking tapped) e-Fan upgrade, I came here.
(actually googled for the CFM of the Rover fan, the 93+- 3.8 Tauri fan delivers 2500 in low, and 4500 in high speeds).

I see all these feel good posts about swapping blades from a Chevy. Awesome, I work at a GM store.. AND have a Schucks err, O'Reilly's close.

The picture of the VDO blade (and the reference above) is that the fan unbolts from the clutch?

Ummmm......

Not on my factory unit... it appears to be integral with the blade.

Ain't a bolt hole nowheres to undo the fan from the clutch.

Help?

 

The only Discovery fan and clutch combo that does not separate is from an 03/04.

Either you have a LR fan combo from that year, or an aftermarket/different manufacturer unit.
