Spring goes in this hole. Any jiggle device or burp valve goes at 12:00 position. Be sure to purge air out of cooling system. If you have been running this way for a while the white vapor could be head gasket. Be sure to monitor coolant use for a while, plus don't trust the heat gauge, get a scanner or Ultra Gauge.

Ahhh the pic helped a lot... Theres no jiggle device or burp valve on the thermostat. I hope that the vapor was caused from back pressure, the stat wasnt in there that long. Again thanks for all the help, gonna see what today brings.

Well i think i broke my baby. Put the stat back in (The right way) Drove about a mile or so and have a large cloud of white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
I dont have it in me anymore to do the head gaskets myself, so to the shop it will go. Sometime.
How safe is it to drive til then?

What you have, I'm afraid, are classic signs of a bad head gasket. Not sure if it's related to thermostat orientation. Then again, the spring might not have properly warmed up causing overheating.
Whatever the case may be, you got problems. In the meantime, enjoy some more good drugs.

NO!!! You CANNOT drive it at all like this, you will ruin the engine.
If you cant get it fixed soon, like in the next week or so, then change the oil and get all of the coolant out of the crankcase because if you dont you will rust everything inside the engine and ruin it.

DITTO ON WHAT SPIKE SAID running the engine with the milky oil will kill the cam and crank bearings it will need to be towed to a shop and made clear to the tow truck and shop DO NOT START THE ENGINE BLOWN HEAD GASKET AND NO COOLANT

btw I would drain the coolant, leave it drained and put in fresh oil
I would say leave off the overflow cap with coolant but you do not know how bad it is blown( with the cap off or realy loose no pressure to blow water into the engine)
