On my cadillac I once wiped the dipstick with a rag that I happened to have some wax on it. Apparently it transferred. And the dipstick wouldn't read till I cleaned it really good with some dawn dish soap

Dipstick tube has a flare at the bottom that keeps it from going to far into the engine. Otherwise it just pulls out if the securing clamp near the top is loosened. So perhaps the tube is lifted up, preventing the dipstick itself from going down into the sump far enough?

RE: dipstick length - just check my 97: 2 & 3/4 inch from tip to full notch; 27 & 7/8 from tip to top of handle. Tube goes into the engine below the mainfold, not in a place where it could be broken off easily.

That wax on rag idea is certainly something to check. Also, would think that if you pulled it out, and laid it on a paper towel or a Kleenex you would see transfer of oil, even if very clean.

Now that is a touchy subject - calling in help for SWMBO and Dad.... might have to be very diplomatic.

Only other place it might have gone - in the coolant, if the radiator has an oil cooler to coolant area leak. The oil cooler is on the passenger side, the low pressure side of the radiator. The oil would be at pressure, and could go into the coolant. Coolant reserve bottle would be muddy and creamy looking, not green. And no way you could add six quarts to the radiator...

Unless he has a lot of smoke from the truck.

she just check again today and its reading at full mark on dipstick, but only one side. Im thinking maybe some fluid or wax got wiped on the dipstick and its repeling the oil or something. I'm going to have her scrub the thing with steel wool or something to see if it helps.

Also Dad in law is a mechanic so as I appreciate all the offers to stop by and help I think it would bruise his ego he checked dipstick tube and everything checked out. no leaks no smoke no noises, runs like a top. Its just a weird thing that threw me through a loop.

The wife wants an old series iia to learn more on, I'm a lucky man to say the least.

Years from now you'll look back and laugh about this, and the garden spots you have visited. But living in a C Container with a composting toilet is not most people's idea of fun.
