That depends on what the connecting rod did when it broke. Score the sleeve on upstroke? Or worse yet, as happened to me when I purchased my "knocking on cranking" '00: connecting rod eventually went through center of block, splitting camshaft, dropping camshaft lobes into oil pan along with 2 lifters and 2 pushrods?

I opted for a used engine with a warranty, and have been driving it for the past 3 years without incident (other than typical Rover stuff). You could rebuild, given the time, assuming damages weren't too great. You could also drop in a 4.6 and gain marginal HP and torque, and worry about the oil pump failing if it is from another Disco from about the same years.

I agree, you need to open it up and look for damage as well as inspect the remaining bears for wear.

Hi Mike, Keith here from Bountiful, Utah.
Got the hair back for my son's Disco II. cept it is mine now. He went on to a Dodge turbo diesel.
Anyway I'm am in the process of making a decision on weather to re-sleeve my original block, rebuild the junk motor I got screw with or try for another used motor.
Turner Engineering re-sleeves these all the time and feel pretty confident machines shop here in the states should be able to handle the process. I'm wondering if I can get by just re-sleeving the one cylinder that is leaking.
There was a used 4.0 on eBay with 84K on it for $1600.00 and the yard has a very good reputation.
I have estimated the rebuild would cost about $2K if the block tests out okay.
Sure hope I can remember how to get the motor back in without too many left over parts .
I miss driving the beast, I hope I can have some success this time around. I'd like to make it my main ride. I'm retired so I don't put an extreme demand on any vehicle. I have nothing else to drive at this time. How you been?

Contrary to what it says on a lot of sites, top hat liners won't fix a crack behind the liner that is leaking coolant into the combustion chamber. You need to have the liner removed, the crack welded up, the block bored for the new liner, and then the liner pressed in.

Any 4.0 or 4.6 rover block should work (and any D2 block will be an exact match), so if your new junk engine's block isn't cracked, you could probably build it instead of repairing your other block.

I am rebuilding my 4.0. Block at MS. I am trying to find some posts on here that can guide me thru what to do with the oil pump while its off. RAVE doesn't have much except new gaskets and seals; nothing on replacing or inspecting the pump gears.... that I could find.
