Default 1999 D2 overheating

I have had this truck for about 4 months now and just developed this problem out of the blue. Was driving down town when i felt the truck shutter alittle and the check engine light flashed and then stayed on. The truck then ran fine for a day. Next day light was off then did the shutter again setting off the CEL again, this time started to overheat so i shut it down fast. I suspect that this is an internal leak into the cylinder that is causing the shutter but is small enough to not cause smoke. I also go a nasty smell from under the hood ( coolant into the cat? ) like rotten eggs. Before this event i have had no visible leaks and all fans running well.

Head gasket leak. Can't really see overheat creeping up because the gauge points at 50% from 130 - 240ish. You want to be 180-200. Have to use a scanner or Ultra Gauge to see real temps. May have coolant loss, white smoke out the exhaust, bubbly gurgle sound under dash, coolant in oil, etc. There is also a $50 test for exhaust gas in coolant.

DIY head gaskets are $300 parts, plus machine shop for heads, two weekends and machine shop inbetween.

Get a scanner and put the codes up.
If you have a misfire code on cylnders
1 or 2 or 7 or 8
that is a head gasket probably.

Other cylinder misfires could indicate more serous sleeve problems with those cylinders.

Or you have just a bad coil or wires going bad.
