1999 Disco ii with bad engine!!!
I have found a 1999 Disco ii with a bad engine. I would like to know what engines will bolt in. and when I say bolt in I mean with absolutly no modifications. Just bolt in and plug up is what i'm looking for. Please include year models because of the whole gems vs. bosch deal. I am not sure which a '99 has...gems or bosch?
First, what failed, exactly?
You will have 2 options, another 4.0 short block, new or used, a new 4.0 Bosch engine if needed, or a 4.6 Bosch short block. All would be plug and play.

The guy tells me that the head gasket blew on the '99 and it over heated. He also says that will crank and drive but not far without overheating. I figure since it's an all Aluminum engine it is pretty much ruined because of the overheating. I have called the salvage yard and they say the engine they have from a 98 disco ii is the one that I need according to their book. Both are 4.0L but im worried about the gems vs. Bosch dilema. I really don't want to buy this truck and engine and figure out that I can even use it. Disco Mike, please figure this out for me. I would really love to be part of the Discovery ii family!
As for the other question I think it's the newer '99. It has the matching painted front bumper and Harmon Kardon stereo.
And what exactly is the difference between a short block and an engine, Mike?

Short block = engine without the heads on any accessories. You will have to get your old heads shaved at a machine shop, get a new head gasket set and install it on your short block. Thats when it becomes a long block. Add the manifolds and you have a complete engine.
But if all that is blown is the head gasket you might want to get your heads done, get a new gasket set and put it on this very engine. Make sure you havent dropped a sleve on this engine and I would recommend you tow it home and not drive it at all.
A 4.6 short block would be awesome because you will have 27 more hp and 50 more lbft of torque. Cheapest way is to just try and redo the heads you have and its also the easiest if its possible. How many miles on the engine? Do you have water in the oil? How bad does it steam in startup?
In 1998 they did not build the Disco II or the bosch engine. Not for America anyways, so that would not be compatable.

Ok I understand what I need now. Now the question is how to make sure that the engine is a bosch engine when I find one? And if I buy anything it'll be a complete engine. Thats how the salvage yards around here do business with engines.
YOU NEED A 4.0 Disco or 4.6 RR BOSCH ENGINE.
But heres how you determine the difference. Pop your hood. Do you see a rectangular plenum chamber with '4.0' or '4.6' embossed on the center of your engine? If so, you have a GEMS engine. BOSCH engines will have a collection of tubes in center and no such label.
