I am new to this and happy to be part of the forum and rover family. So many amazing people helping out each other here.


Unfortunately about one month ago the car overheated and was told by mechanic that it was a thermostat problem so I had a new thermostat put in. While the car no longer overheats, and seems to run good, I noticed it is still slowly losing water from the reservoir and found water on the oil dipstick. After doing some research this seems to be an indication that the head gasket may need to be replaced.

Please help me out with identifying problem and costs associated with it.

I am from Bay Area, California and interested to meet people from Rover clubs if there are any get togethers in and around this area.

You can have the coolant system pressure tested this will confirm what your problem is
Do some research on this forum about your problem and also if your not a do it your self type of person I suggest you research the costs of repairing your problem before a mechanic takes you to the cleaners

I spoke to a independent mechanic and he quoted me around 3000-4000$ for all the plugs water pump bolts and everything he said but which I am not going to spend that much on this. May be I have to try other mechanics or DIY. Will keep digging the forum and other places to find out more about this problem.

 

A decent price for a head gasket job is anywhere from 1500-2000, any more is excessive. This includes the cost of machining the heads, gaskets, bolts, etc.

Not to promote another forum, but LRRforums.com seems to have a lot of bay area people. You should be able to find a good mechanic on that site.

 

And you might decide to DIY and learn some new skills and swear words. By the time you have done an HG job you will be pretty handy under the hood. By the time I finished mine I had spent more time and money and learned some good lessons.


Like that if zombies eat brains then I'll be safe....

I got a quote from a local Mechanic for 1400 labour and parts and machining extra....that was the least i could get so far....I think I will try to DIY...any idea how much all the parts cost and where to look for?

 

1400 is a good price, Heads must be resurfaced. Do a search HeadGasket repairs for what you need to ask for...I recommend ARP Studs over factory!
Overheating can lead to other issues hopefully this is all you will need.

 

I bet your coolant tank has coolant coming out of it.

Just replace the head gaskets.
$500 or less if you do it yourself.

it is not going to rain until Nov or December in the Bay area.
You can do it in a parking lot like I did
