Easy to diagnose. Take the belt off (fan cowl and fan off) ... then skinny spinny each by hand and I bet you find the issue. Careful you don't knock a hole in the radiator when pulling the fan -- and careful with the plastic water hose that goes from drivers side radiator over to the coolant expansion tank.

its most certainly the water pump, but I’ll change out the idler pulley too and probably the belt (keep the current as a spare) whilst I’m in there messing around

Yep I've found when the idler pulleys feel even a little gritty (nice description) it's good to replace them as well.

THIS! If you can feel a bearing, its bad. If you can't feel it, but you can wiggle it a across the major axis, its bad. And they go down fast from there at engine rpm.
