Roverlover: is your whine proportional to

1) Roadspeed? 2) Engine speed? or 3) Power?

I have recently noticed a similar noise that seems roadspeed related, and goes away under power and also at higher speeds; it's sort of whooshy, though it has a definite pitch; about 7-800hz, an octave above A440.

At least, I *think* it's roadspeed related.

Haven't traced it down yet. Long weekend...

I have completed much of the 60K service. The whine is NOT proportional to roadspeed or engine speed. When I start my truck up in the morning it is not present right away. It seems as though once the engine is warmed up it appears. But it is present when in park, neutral, driving, etc.....But goes away when I press the accelerator. It returns once I am at a constant speed ie: goes away when accelerating onto the on-ramp, but returns once I hit hit 65 mph and stay there. Could it be the bearings for the water pump that are shot?

Is it possible it might be a leak-whistle from the brake booster?

When you're accelerating, in case you've never tested this, you lose most of the vacuum boost on your brakes; it comes back when you come off power -- which is exactly what you describe for your noise.

It's a scientific wild-*** guess, admittedly...

from your post the noise may be coming from either a bad tensioner pulley bearing or the SAI pump try cleaning the filter first ( Secondary air injection pump)

I have a very similar squeal... right now I'm pretty certain it is a whistle though. The LOUD squeal starts about 1 or 2 minutes after I start it, and goes away when I hit the gas. Once the car is good and warmed up (15 minutes), the noise goes away in town, but reoccurs on the highway as I decelerate.

To isolate mine, I grabbed the hose from the shop vac and moved it around until the whistle got loud. Turns out, it is coming from behind the A/C compressor. I'm pretty certain either I have a tiny crack in the intake or a bad IM gasket. I'm going to get the kit and redo mine this winter. I'll make doing the plugs easier anyway.

I highly suggest you track down the location your squeal is coming from. Please note that a Mechanic's stethoscope didn't work for me because it wasn't a tick or bearing squeal.
