You guys are probably right but it looked wired tight and I didn’t want to take the chance that the road was washed out somewhere or that we’d get in some other trouble. All the same, the trail was pretty awesome. Very challenging and some beautiful views.
Heading back now. 856 miles to go and we decided to skip the hotel in Louisiana and drive through the night.

I would assume that if the road/trail/area is closed, there has to be a sign posted. Otherwise, as noted, it is just a barrier for animals. I was in that area last year and always went through cattle gates. Just check for signs, make sure it is not private land or other restricted area (military, reservation aso) and close the gate behind you. I learned this from overland videos on youtube.

So with the trip over, now I turn to the repairs abs to get ready for Uwharrie Safari in May. Sometimes I feel like the Dunkin’ Donuts guy - Time to fix the Rover. But these are mostly on me with all the abuse I put this thing through.
So I already replaced the thermostat, axle seal and the front passenger hub. USPS lost my alternator so that will have to wait until early next week.
On the docket for tomorrow:
change engine and diff oil
fix muffler heat shield
reset rear bumper
bend back some quarter panels
Touch up bumpers and sliders
Undercarriage clean and inspect Cleaning the mating surface Yeah this things toast Was able to get the seal in by using a pvc coupler, a block of wood and few taps with a 5lb mallet
Replaced the alternator this evening with a 130 amp one from latrical. It was a lot bigger and I didn’t think it would fit but it did. Connections were oriented a bit different which made for a challenge but I finally got it figured. Hopefully this will fix my charging problems.
I would highly suggest adding a ground cable from the alternator case and go directly to the negative side of the battery.

Not sure that is needed. Alternator is bolted to an aluminum bracket with 4 connection points which is bolted directly to the block in a minimum of four places. There is zero chance it is not adequately grounded. Now it is possible the engine block is not grounded good if the battery ground cable is loose or something, but that also should go directly to the alternator bracket.

During my years of being in the military one of my specialty codes was as an electrician (comm/nav) on F-16 jets and HH-60G helicopters, I had a side hustle as a car stereo installer. Weird I know. Lol I decided to do the Big 5 cable upgrade on my Disco 2 with ANCOR Marine grade cable tinned copper strands Type 3:
1. 0AWG from battery + to alternator + (through modded fuse box connected to 150A fuse link)
2. 0AWG from battery + to starter +
3. 0AWG from battery - to grounding midpoint
*4. 0AWG from battery - to alternator case/mount
5. 0AWG from chassis to engine
For me it was a personal choice to make and add the extra 0AWG cable from the alternator housing to my quick disconnect switch as a direct ground.
It probably doesn’t need to be done but for me it was a peace of mind for direct voltage and current flow with a thicker gauge cable.
Man love the trip recap. Can't believe you ended up on escalator and not hells gate. Hells gate is visually worse than it is, pretty sure the drop down to the bottom is worse than going up it. I didn't lift any tires on the line I took until maybe the very very last ledge.
