'96 Disco Sick Need help urgent! Engine losing power at 2500rpm!!!
Have a '96 Disco that has started to loose power in all gears at 2500rpm. Have changed the fuel filter, checked the tank filter, put some injector cleaner through with the fuel but nothing is making any difference. Thought that if it was the injectors it would be running rough but is only a problem when the rpms get to 2500 in all gears. As soon as any strain on motor just looses power and dies. Will cruise fine otherwise. Could it be the turbo? Any suggestions would be great. [:@]
Is it a diesel? How many miles?
I'm not familiar at all with a problem like yours, but here are my thoughts anyway:
Check the distributor: understrain your timing is supposed to change - I don't know if it's electronic or vaccum advance on your truck - if it's a diesel don't read this line.
Take the oil cap off while it's running and see if air comes out.
Is the oil too full?
Any vaccum leaks? Any recent work under the hood? Perhaps some vaccum lines are routed wrong.

You really need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and take it for a test drive to get a clear idea of whats going on. I'm awaiting replies to my thread on a similar problem so maybe someone can offer advice for the both of us.
If the power loss is instant and results in full engine braking, try cleaning the connections to the stop solenoid - if it's dirty or oily in there it can cause similar symptoms.
Cheers,
Cheers,
Whenever I hear of power loss under load like that I think of three things:
1. exhaust backpressure
2. fouled plugs (not a factor in your case)
3. fuel delivery.
Best I can come up with.

So far we have replaced the fuel lift pump which was leaking and thought we had cracked the prob. but no. Bummer. Now looking at fuel line and possible blockages. It does run well at times but other times like a shower of ****. Will look at presure and other things mentioned. Thanks for the interest and advise guys.

As I understand on gas engines there is a fuel cutoff at a certain RPM to prevent over reving the engine and it's controlled through the alternator. Maybe a diesel has something similar but at a much lower RPM. Possibly the engine speed limiter is defective and kicking in at a much lower RPM.
