Default '98 Disco wobble in steering

I have a 1998 discovery 1 that, when I hit a bump, shakes in the steering wheel. I have been told that this is caused by a bad power steering gear box. Does that sound right?

I would have the tie rods and ball joints checked out first.
How much play is there in the steeing wheel? With the truck off and the wheels straight, turn the key on but do not start the truck, move the steering wheel from side to side.
Turn it as far left as you can before you feel resistance, then do the same going to the right. How far can you move the steering wheel? 1", 2" 3"? More than one inch to the left or right of center and the steering box is loose.

It happened to mine and the only thing that was wrong was bad bushings in the shocks. It was a cheap fix.

It can be from bad swivel preload, bad steering dampener any and all bushing, tie rod ends and the list goes on.
Is the truck still stock, how many miles on it?

Thanks for the advice. I will have the ball joints and tie rods checked. There are no signs that anything else is wrong and have always maintained the vehicle. I hope it is a bushing! The vehicle has app. 130,000 miles.

I had the same problem on my 99 DISCO I.The whole problem went away when I replaced the ball joints and steering damper. Total Parts cost was about $250. It took me a day to the job, but if you know what you're doing, it will go much quicker.

Yes, it is stock. I changed the steering damper first. It still wobbles. I am hoping it is a cheap fix. Unfortunatley, when it is a .50 fix or a $1500.00 fix I am the guy that gets the $1500.00. bill. Never have gotten the cheap fix on these vehicles. I loved my Range Rover 4.6 but, at 75,000 it became a joke.
