Default 98 Discovery service engine codes

The service engine light just came on my 98 Discovery – not flashing though. Pulled these codes: P0306, P1316.

My first thought was plugs and wires. I ordered a 8mm Magnecor set online and my boyfriend (who’s more mechanical than me) is going to change them on Saturday. He has yet to work on the Disco yet, so any words of wisdom for him would be greatly appreciated. Also, any thoughts on the P1316 code?

It has about 118K miles on it. 87 octane used. Recent service (in last 2 months): replaced worn pcv hose at throttle body, replaced aux. drive belt, new water pump, new pinion seal.

Much thanks!

Ursula,
First do plugs and wires, switch to hi octane flush the crank case and do an induction cleaning.
If you want some help with this, e-mail me your tele number and a good time for you to call me.
The 1316 is an excessive emission misfire code.

Thanks, Mike!

Should I hold off on changing the oil until an induction cleaning is done? Or does it matter?

Yes.
How about flushing the engine as part of your oil change.
Buy 6 quarts of any cheap tranny ATF, drain the engine, l;eave in the old filter, poor the 6 quarts of ATF into the engine and let it idle for 20 minutes, don't drive it.
After 20 minutes do your regular oil change, drain out the ATF, change the filter and refill with oil.
