Default AC

I have a 2000 disco 2 that I keep in mint condition. I have noticed that my ac does not seem to be cooling like it use to. I never had issues with it cooling down the interior even in 95+ heat in the summer. it is tinted dark as well. I have replaced the compressor and the dryer. I have just purchased a knew blower, thermostat and the resistor. The air is blowing out of the vents at around 52 degrees but just does not seem to be cutting it for cooling. After I replace these 3 parts what else could I do. I have the work done by rover specialists. There are no system leaks ect. Should I also replace the condenser. I am at a loss. I keep getting told they were not great ac units to begin with but like I said I never had any cooling issues before. I bought the disco knew in 2000. Are there any modifications that can be made for it to blow more air volume with a different blower. Can I have the blower rewired to blow harder?

Any Help would be apprcted.

Thank You,

Joe

Nice rig Joe. Couple of things come to mind- did the under dash blower motor get replaced? Also, hows your alternator output?

Remove your lights on the front and see if more air through the grille helps.

I did replace the blower with a used one a couple of years ago. But I am going to actually replace it tomorrow with a brand new blower VDO Brand . My alternator is new as well and was checked out when replaced about 6 months ago. Along with the blower I am also going to replace the blower thermostat (one with the cooling fins) and the small blower motor resistor at the same time. By the way would you know where the small resistor is located? I know where the big thermostat with the fins is located under the dash by the blower. Thats all I can think of. As for my big front lights. They have been on the disco for 14 years always cooled fine. I never thought of the alternator. It was actually rebuilt to factory specs because my rover guys said the knew ones sold are junk. Thanks again for all the ideas.

Does it blow well or is there barely any air coming out?

Sometimes you have to accept certain things the way they are.

AC in our vehicles can only cool the air about 20 degrees. 52 isnt bad.

You can check for bent fins or clogged fins (mud, grass clippings, piece of trash, etc.)

As to blower, you may want to read up on the "Pontiac blower mod". Haven't done it, but it may blow more air.

Also, check your ductwork, may have some loose or maybe some leaves blocking airflow.

I assume repairs were done with new o-rings, proper refrigerant and oil.

Do you have rear air?

Is the secondary fan, mounted in front of condenser, coming on while A/C is in use? Also, is the condenser and radiator clean of debris? They get plugged with debris over time and lose efficency.

What was the outside temperature and humidity levels, when you were recording 52 degrees out of the vent? Normally, under most conditions...a 30/35 degree difference is about all you will see with R-134a. The higher the humidity level, the less likelihood you will achieve anything better.

Also, has the amount of people traveling with you changed? The amount of people inside the vehicle factors into the equation. A human puts off about 300 BTU's an hour. So, times that by the amount of folks riding with you...and the system has to battle that heat value...along with the amount of heat values between ambient and desired cabin temperatures.

Your A/C unit does not cool the air...it removes the heat from it. So, the more heat it has to remove...the less efficency it becomes and it has reached its maximun heat transfer levels.

X1 ............... the front condenser fan should only operate at 28C or greater ambient temperature. Check the fan is operating correctly and the condenser fins are clear and not bent or corroded. There is also a gauge that measures the ambient temperature, ensure that isn't damaged and is working correctly. For maximum continuous cooling always run the system on cabin recirc. The lowest temperature on recirc should produce circa 15-16C in the immediate duct apertures after say 3-5 minutes.

These are all great ideas and I will follow up on them. The weather here in charlotte NC has gotten crazy. With the humidity its like 108-110 degrees. You might be right that its doing the best it can. I do not remember heat like we are having and have had the last few years. We have a BMW m5 and a Maserati QP and they both cool like crazy but on high they blow huge volumes of air. The beemer especially. They have crazy strong blowers. At least twice as hard as the rover and are smaller internally to cool. I will check everything else out and post what I find out. I cannot thank everyone enough.....This is the best forum going....
