Default Advice for the purchase of a discovery

Hello the my name is Robert and I want to buy a Discovery. The information I have been getting on the web is conflicting and vague so I have decided to come to the owners of these rugged majesties for advice. I am 23 y/o I make 17k/year and want to offroad more and I am usually spending my weekends outdoors. I take care of the vehicles I own and perform the basic maintenance and some intermediate. I am looking at the models that were made between 1994-1998 and I want to know if I have the income to sustain this vehicle but most importantly are these cars DURABLE? I dont expect a 4cyl Japanese but what are some probable mileage numbers I can get from this vehicle and how much is the cost of maintenance. I apreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Thank you.

Sounds like you fit the bill for a Rover driver. You want to off road more? You've come to the right place. My stock '96 outperforms my buddies XJ on 33's. As far as durability goes, the key is maintenance. If you do all the maintenance when you should you can take a Disco to 300k+ miles no problem. Maintenance isn't cheap. It needs full synthetic fluids just about all around, but DIs (94-99) are cheaper and way easier to maintain than DIIs (mid 99 to 04). "Rugged majesties" is a good way to put it.

go with a DI (96-99) they are cheaper and less electronic crap under the dash. as stated by hazletbassist89 the maintenance is going to be costly, but if you do it yourself you will have more fun and it's cheaper. if you don't have fun working on cars.......you might not want one.
maintenance maintenance maintenance maintenance!
