Default Air conditioning issue

For the past year my air conditioning hasn't worked and it's been AWFUL. I tried turning it on (by pressing AUTO when it's on the lowest temp setting) but it blows hot air. It blows outside temp air if I press the ECON button, which feels a lot cooler than pressing AUTO.
I just recently spent almost $700 on fixing a coolant leak, replacing hoses and what not, but that didn't do anything. Tried adding freon but it wouldn't take it, so it's full, but I'm still having troubles. I'd like to fix it myself instead of taking it to a mechanic, wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Maybe fuses? Or the compressor? I'm not sure.
Last year, my partners father took off a certain part, but he said he looked it up and it is only needed for extreme temperatures and is a "luxury part", not sure if that could be the issues too, I just need some help, I can't even find anything online.

First step would to make sure that the clutch on the compressor is engaging when the ac is turned on. Check the wiring / plug as well.

Go from there I suppose

When you did all this AC work did you put a vacuum on it and add the proper oil/freon amount? Is the compressor ever cycling on? You need to put a set of gauges on it to verify the high/low side pressures. It could be low pressure switch, it could be the compressor clutch, or it could be out of freon. It could also be the AC relay/fuse.

If you are going to fix it yourself read the A/C section of the RAVE so you know where everything is, then google how to trouble shoot an A/C system.

I have no no idea what a luxury add on the am A/C system would be.

There is an A/C system code check you can do with the control unit, but I forget the procedure, it is on YouTube. Never helped me solve a thing.

If you don't have gauges then you should get them plus you need a adapter to connect to the system regular car adapter
if you don't have these then just pay a shop or stock a hvac guy to help you

If my daughter had that problem, I'd suggest that she buy 2 vice grips from WalMart and use them to clamp shut the two black rubber hoses that go from the motor to inside the cockpit (to the heater core there) when the motor was turned off and cold.

If for whatever reason hot radiator fluid was erroneously circulating through those 2 hoses when it wasn't supposed to be circulating, closing off those two hoses for a quick test would have the A/C blowing cold again on an otherwise properly running Disco 2.

So clamping those 2 hoses should tell you if the problem is in the temperature control system or with the A/C.

Those hoses are shown inside the red area if your Disco motor looks like this picture.

Coolant is always flowing thru the heater core. The only thing that prevents the heat from going thru the cabin at anytime is the flap for the heater core. If it's stuck for some reason then yes you'd have hot air mixing with the cold air from the AC (it does this actually all the time in AUTO) when the system is maintaining a set temp.

Basic AC 101 if the compressor isn't engaging/disengaging = the AC is not working.

Just because you tried to add "freon" and it didn't take does not mean its full....go to either the low side or high side ac ports, take a smal flat head (pocket screwdriver) and push in schrader valve quickly and release. If a bit of refrigerant comes out you know you have something in there..
Compressor will not come on if no refrigerant in system..

Try touching the low side hose up by the firewall when the engine is running and the ac is on. It should be very cold. If it's not ice cold you got a problem that probably going to have to be serviced by someone who works on auto air conditioners.
