All this time I thought it was the Rover !!!
Guys, after 3 years of Discovery series2 ownership, I just recently found that all those chimes on start-up from when I got the vehicle until they got more frequent than just on start-up etc...etc...
The big guy was just trying to tell me that the Alternator was not connected properly and the little alternator wire that was loose was just getting looser and looser until it just didn't make contact anymore, thus the even more frequent chimes.
I feel like an idiot for not finding this out sooner. My front windshield defrost that I thought wasn't worth **** in the past 3 winters, was simply not getting enough juice. This morning there was frost from overnight and I was amazed by how quick it actually defrosted the windshield !!!! Now I understand the big fuss about how one from a cold climate shouldn't be without it.
But it got me thinking. Maybe I changed all the actuators for NOTHING and they were just not getting enough juice either. Yes the new ones work, but maybe the old ones were just a bit stiff ???
Same goes for my 6 disc changer that I changed. I wondered why the new one was also jamming. NOT ENOUGH JUICE !!! Works perfect now !!!
I changed the battery last spring. The old one probably died from that situation ???
DAMMMMNN!
All that money wasted. Well, I learned something, But its a big price to pay to find out you're an idiot !
Now, I find that the truck runs smoother, accelerates smooother and faster...Am I just imagining this, or does the alternator actually plays a role in how well a vehicle performs. I thought that once a vehicle is started, it doesn't rely on electricity performance wise. Now, hopefully I'll find that the truck is better on gas !!! Is that possible ??
Thanks guys,
Steph

SWEET!!!
Dont you hate it when it is the simple stupid stuff that you never thought of?
Yes a engines performance relies on electricity, not enough juice and then you get smaller spark, fuel pump cant run as fast so you get lower fuel PSI which means less engine response.
Now here is the BIG question...did the lack of juice cause your head gaskets to fail?
I know it caused your oil leaks.

I'm going to check mine now!
Could it be true - fix everything by tightening a wire?

When I got my Disco the belt was routed improperly around the alternator and there wasn't a sticker indicating the routing path. Because of this, the result was reduced tension and contact with the alternator pulley. The thing would charge fine at idle, slip at driving speeds ..sometimes. This caused the Tach to act flaky and dash lights to flash ...actually a lot of things worked intermittently because they probably didn't have enough juice to 'latch' the relays. The previous owner had the dash apart and did a bunch of things and finally I guess just sold it. I drove it 1/2 across the country like this and put up with the annoying issues. When I got home, I pulled some hair out (well, it just fell out, I guess) trying to resolve the issue. Took a while and I was almost ready to buy a new alternator, but eventually a new belt routed the correct way and boom! all the problems resolved. I feel your pain and now your joy!

I know, it's just that right now I'm re-thinking everything I took for granted.
Nope, the truck is telling you something. Now you have to figure it out !!!
Go check the little wire behind the alternator to make sure it's nice and tight.
