Best way to go about front driveshaft: New Disco II owner
I like the driveshaft power option. Seems the most simple approach and I get a new robust component for a critical section.
As for what I meant with "clean" coolant, I meant that it does not seem gummy, no engine oil, and no bubbles coming up while running. I plan on going through all the fluids, but I wanted to drive it around for a week and make sure there's nothing catastrophic to do. So far so good. (knock on wood) I do get a very faint wisp of coolant when I pop the hood. Other than the valve covers it seems that its the only small leak to track down. I don't think head gaskets leak coolant externally, so I'll guess its some older rubber components or the water pump weeping. Need to do more investigation, but its so faint and nothing seems visible.
Do I dare do a coolant pressure test to find the leak given the fragile nature of the head gaskets?
I also haven't found anything electrically amiss, and the transfer case goes into low just fine.
This was a somewhat accidental purchase, but it was too good to say no to. I've owned a Jaguar XJR and various MBs/BMWs in the past so I've been there and done that with just about everything. I currently have a 2012 VW GTI and a 1985 500SL, neither of which I want to drive when the salt gets laid down. Hard to think of the Disco as a beater, but I did get it for a beater price.
Pictures coming!

If you have other vehicles, pop that driveshaft out, (PB blaster the bolts the night before - you'll be grateful you did", and haul it down to a good local driveline repair place for a rebuild. LR shafts are nothing special, and if they can do a freightliner, these toy-sized (to them) jobs are a snap.
I got my rebuilt w/greasable fittings, balanced and painted by the truck shop here for $175.00. Took them a day.
Then take it home, pop it back in and don't forget to upgrade the bolts to grade 8 material.
Done and done.
