Cool Brakes

Hey fellers. I have been experiencing really loud squealing when I push on the brakes. I took it in to have the brakes looked at and they said that the pads had 80%. I can see the rotors though and they feel like they have some grooves in them. Could this be the source of the noise? And these rotors can be turned can't they?

Also, for fun I asked them how much to do the brakes all the way around. They quoted 1100 for brakes and rotors(installed). I found them online for 500. I have changed drum brakes before but never caliper style. Is it a doable task for an amatuer?

Your brake pads are the cause of the squealing. Cheap pads will squeal whether they're new or ready for replacement. You can try pulling the pads and applying Disc Brake Quiet to the back of the pads. I don't believe that the rotors can be turned.

Brake pads are easy to replace. The rotors are a little tougher but still possible to do yourself if you are at all mechanically inclined. Get yourself a repair manual and just follow the instructions. You can download the RAVE manual for free.

The $1100 quote for pads and rotors includes a lot of labor. You can get performance drilled and slotted rotors with pads from Atlantic British for around $600.

Thanks AK Rover. I saw the same brake parts on that site. I looked at the lower grade rotors and pads, but I think when it comes time to replace the pads I will go with the performance parts. Why not? With the money I saved doing it myself, it would probably be worth it. Why "AK Rover" by the way? Gun reference?

Idaho, If you have a D1, read the procedure before you start. It isn't too hard, but there are a lot of parts to take off before you get to the rotors. You have to pull the axle, remove the wheel bearings, pull the hub, and then remove the rotor from the hub. Plan on re-packing the wheel bearings and might want to buy a new set to have handy just in case you get there and one is messed up. Save you a trip to the parts house while your truck is in pieces.

I have a 2001 D2. What kind of grease do you pack the bearings with? I really need to get the rave download. I tried to download it to the external hardrive I just bought, and after waiting like 2 hours for the download to completed it didn't work. I suspect it's because I haven't quite figured the damn thing out yet....

Also, I did a fluid change last weekend and changed the plugs and air filter. The old plugs were badly worn. I put in the Iridium plugs and a K&N filter. I immediately noticed a ticking sound coming from the valves on the rh side. I have checked the oil a few times now and its dead on. I also checked all the plugs to make sure they were connected properly. Kind of weird, but it still runs fine.

Get rid of your K&N air filter. As a general rule they kill D2 MAFs. Like all rules there are exception but the majority of people who install K&N air filters end up having to replace the MAF because of it.

What kind of oil did you use? Did you also change your plug wires?

Not sure that you have to pull the axles on a D2. Think it it mounted on the outside of the hub and retained with a #2 phillips that has to be removed with an impact.

its a number 4 phillips, but yeah, easy to do. there are no bearings to be packed on a d2, also, no the rotors cannot be turned, theyre too soft and will be ruind.
