Default Calif. DMV Salvage Title

Hello to all:

I have come across a 2003 Land Rover DiscoveryII SE 4.6L with a Calif. DMV Salvage Title. On the "Pink," it is stamped "...For EXPORT ONLY

The truck has 130,000 miles on it. I was told it was a theft recovery truck. The insurance company totaled it (just way too much to repair).
All new interior, new seats - front and rear, new door panels - front and rear. Even new "thick" carpet/mat in the rear compartment.

No body damage...at all ! The truck was not in an accident! The current owner is in a quandary...he understands that there is a salvage title, but what does the "...For EXPORT ONLY" mean!?!

Am I "nuts" for even considering this truck?!? Perhaps, I should go to my local Calif. DMV, and ask some/a lot of questions?!?

Any thoughts...? ? ?

Thanks, Donald

I'd avoid it because it's an '03 which are prone to oil pump failures. You can look up the VIN range for the oil pump. Not trying to get you away from this board (it is great), but LRRForums.com has a lot of Cali. guys who might be able to answer your question.

DMVs suck and I'd bet they would just tell you that it can't be done (they did it to me)

http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr13.htm

should get you through it

For export only means that the DMV in California will not register it nor will they issue plates for it. You may be able to register it in another state but that is dependent on the specific rules. This would be a great purchase (if really cheap < 4 K) if you could use it in Mexico or canada or whatever. Check the VIN and see that it is not in the 3A771XXX to 3A808XXX range.

Here in NC, its not a problem with salvage titles as long as you can prove that the vehicle is safe.

I wouldnt want to even consider having to go thru CA DMV

I dont see how ANYONE would have the patience for CA DMV, the nightmare stories that come out of that are.....
