Default Changed plugs, wires, front O2 sensors (pic inside)

Boy, that was fun. I really hate the sai tube now. I think snaking that in and out was the toughest part.

I was getting a check engine light due to lean and rich conditions on the passenger side (Bank 2). It had also starting running really rough and gas mileage was dropping. After seeing the plugs and O2 sensor on that side, I can see why. In the pic below, driver's side is on the left and passenger's on the right.

Notice that five plugs are Autolites, and three are champions. Also notice just how black the passenger's side is. So far, the truck is running great with the new parts.

Bryan, I am thinking about doing this myself as I am getting the good ole CEL as well, and I was wondering just how difficult it was to do this, what tools you used and about how long it took. Did you use 8mm wires?? And what O2 sensors did you go with? Thanks.

It wasn't too bad. Just took a little patience. I used the info in the sticky for this forum. Very helpful. I'm not sure how different your 2000 will be. I used Bosch +4, magnecore 8 mm, and o2 sensors from Atlantic British.

No special tools. Just hand tools. You will need a large open ended wrench or special socket for the o2 sensors. I used a large standard wrench.

I am doing the same thing tomorrow morning. I have #4418 +4 plugs, 8mm Mags, and ordered Bank 2 sensor 1 & 2, I didn't replace the o2's on bank one. My plugs looked just like yours black on B2 and white on B1. Your o2 on B1 looks good from the photo though.

Was yours also spitting gas right out the tail pipe or leaving a black mark where the tail pipe was pointed to idle for a few minutes?

Yes on spitting black. I've heard you should replace the o2's in pairs though.

I did - both the sensors on the passenger side (bank 2). But I didn't think you had to cross over to the other side as well.

I guess I will see after I get them in tomorrow huh? LOL

When replacing O2's you should replace them as follows...
Both fronts at the same time or both backs at the same time.
It is best replace them all at once, but only replacing one side will do you not much good.
By doing it that way one side of the engine will run 100% correct and the other side of the engine will run at less than 100%.
In other words...your new spark plugs on the side of the engine with the old O2's wont last long.

Spike - are you in agreeance with Mike that it's OK to do the front O2's only? I read the Rave to try to determine if the rear O2's are used for anything but catalyst monitoring, and I began to wonder b/c of the following statement:

NAS vehicle engine calibration uses downstream sensors to compensate for aged upstream sensors, thereby maintaining low emissions.

To me, that makes it a little fuzzy. I wonder if the rear O2s compensate when the fronts are NOT aged. Even if I'm not getting MILs, I wonder if old rear O2s can slightly impact fuel mileage and performance.
