Default Checking oil pressure with a gauge

In hopes of dissecting my other post "How much would you pay for this 98 Disco" into smallerthreadsfor searching purpose, I figure I'll start off with athread on checking oil pressure. So here goes.

For me, the easy way to hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge was to remove the oil pressure switch (located in the engine front cover - right behind the lower radiator hose and above the oil cooler lines) and install my fitting.

From the different threads I've read prior to removing the switch was that the thread pitch for the switch was not a common pitch. So I had to be creative and think outside the box.

I went to Lowes (or any plumbing store) and purchase two items.
[ul][*]1/4" MIP x 2-1/2"[*]1/4" FIP x 1/8" FIP[/ul]
Then I cut the 1/4" MIP fitting in half.Which is what this pic shows

The next step was to cut new threads onto one half of the cut fitting. In order to do that I had to reduce the OD (outer diameter) of the fitting. I used a disc sander and evenly reduce the OD. This pics shows a comparison between a reduce OD and one that wasn't reduced.

I then took my 1/2" 20NF die and cut new threads on the section that was reduced. Also installed the 1/4" FIP x 1/8" FIP on the other end.

Installed my fitting into the engine cover and ran the tubing to the gauge that was mounted on the firewall. Mounting the gauge inside the cabin would be the ideal location for a instant visual check, but for me I just needed a suitable location for diagnostic purpose.

Hope this helps
