Default clinking noise after shutoff

My truck is running great, just finished all the 60k service stuff including new plugs, wires and intake manifold gasket. Everything seems fine, but now after shutoff for a few minutes I'm getting a loud, metal on metal "clinking" that wasn't there before...at least I don't think it was. Is this normal?

No, it is not normal, when exactly do you hear it and can you be more specific as the area it is coming from?

I think what you are hearing is the exhaust cooling off. I know the sound that you are talking about, probally WAS there before but you are more concious of it now because you just had work done.

I hear it a few times a minute for about 3-5 minutes after turning the motor off, and it does sound like the exhaust manifolds cooling off. It's coming from the back of the motor near that area, so it could be just that. Any other thoughts though?

As Spike has already mentioned, your exhaust system is cooling down, could be a heat shield starting to fail.

Hmmm, okay. Well, if it is the heat sheild, how exactly does it fail? Isn't it basically just a piece of metal? Can it be repaired (welds or something) or does it need replacing?

It is usually multi layered material, some time the material separates or the mounts break.

Thanks mike, I'll check and see if I find anything. I'm wondering, if that's the culprit - would spot welding it or pop riveting be an option?

Just take it to your corner muffler shop, they deal with loose heatshields all the time.
I dont think that is what it is, but they will look at it for you.
