Changed both front and rear diff fluid today in my 2000 Disco 2. I put 85-140 in for those curious.

The old oil in the rear diff looked like a really-viscous coffee with cream. Water? Any ideas guys?

I'd say it is not uncommon to find water getting into these areas if driven through water crossings over time.
How do your seals look?

Changing fluid every 2-3 years helps keep everything fresh....

 

Condensation collecting in the diffs is not uncommon, especially if the axle breathers are clogged.
Gear oil is cheap, change it once a year, thats what I do, every spring.

 

Thanks, guys. I'll have a look at the seals. The diffs don't appear to leak, but I'll have a look at them.

Spike, where are the axle breathers located? I just looked in RAVE for a picture or reference to them ,but I didn't come up with much.

 

They are ontop of each axle near the diff's, there will be a hose running from it.

And the banjo bolt that holds the lines gets clogged with mud or just dust and condensation (man-made mud).

Yep - and blow out lines with some air from a can or compressor.
