So I bought the 180 tstat from Bap Geon for about $40 (not bad). I changed the tstat out and it was pretty simple except for the friggin bottom hose and the dang old hose clamps. Everything was working fine and then all of a sudden the coolant starting leaking and when I looked it seemed like it was coming from that bottom hose, and it was leaking bad. So I assumed the hose had a hole or something. I took off the hose (which is connected to the radiator) and didn't see anything wrong with the hose. But I lost all of the coolant that was in the radiator....I put everything back together but haven't started it yet because I know it will start smoking and stuff and wasn't sure what the proper way to go about this. Anyone have an idea about this?! Hope the leak isn't something to bad and something I can fix.

You need to know for a fact where the leak is coming from in order to fix it. So you need to fill the system back up with coolant or really inspect it to find the leak first so you do not loose all your coolant again. Are you sure you had the hose clamp on correctly? The bottom one can be a pain sometimes.

How do I refill it properly? Do I just fill the reservoir and then wait till it goes down, turn the truck off so no air gets in and then put more in, and repeat?

Actually, unbolt reserve container, raise it up, fill that way, and bleed from the T junction screw, all when cold.

Where is the T junction screw located?

-So just fill the reserve container while holding it up, and that will ensure that enough coolant is in the radiator? Do I need to do anything when I turn the car on for the first time?

Thanks for all the help!

Where the upper radiator hose has a T style junction. Or you may have the original upper radiator hose with the bleed screw in the center of the fan shroud. Which do you have?

For some reason the coolant still seems to leak from the thermostat, and it looks like its coming from the bottom hose. Everything fits fine and the hose and everything is properly, but not sure whats going on. I am almost to the point where I want to give up and take it in to a mechanic, but persistant to fix this on my own. Anybody have other other suggestions on what I should check?

Thanks!

Thanks!
Ours leaked from the same spot and changing from the Land Rover spring clamp to a stainless steel band clamp fixed the problem.

morning all, i know that there are at least a dozen posts, if not more, on this issue, but haven't found the info that i need. the brass bleeder screw that everybody is talking about, what is the part #? all the posts that i have read list the website, but the bleeder screw is a bmw part and all they list is the different bmw's that it fits. what year and model bmw bleeder screw should i order? and, if i wrap it in teflon tape, will that cause any problems? and lastly, once i have this screw, and its wrapped (if it won't cause problems) how hard should i try to unscrew the plastic one? mine seems to be stuck tight. and i have been known to be a little gorilla handed when it comes to handling fragile parts. thank you and sorry if this info is out there.
