The camshaft sensor is on the front cover--you are talking about cam, not crank sensor?

To get to it you will need to take the fan shroud and fan off, and remove the belt. I am not with my rover today, but I think it is right below the water pump and behind the main pulley, and there is one bolt that you can get a wrench on at the top driver side of the main pulley. I don't know whether you can squirrel the sensor out from there with the main pulley in place--I've always done it the with the pulley off. The connector, which goes toward the passenger side, is in a keeper that you can work the main side of the connector out of.

Honestly, it is in a tedious spot. Maybe someone else can chime in. I've never messed with mine with the main pulley on.
