Cranks, see RPMs, but not start
About a few months ago I noticed that the car took two cranks to start. Usually it happened during the day, so I presumed that something happened when the car was exposed to heat. Over time, the issue became a bit worse. The culmination happened yesterday when the car died while I was coming to a stop sign next to my parents' house. Crank Position Sensor? That's what I thought. Replaced the not-so-old Bosch unit with a new generic part from AutoZone. It cranks, but does not start. Other interesting info:
1. When I crank, UltraGuage shows 170 rpm
2. When my exhaust was off (had to do it to get to CPS), I could smell gas.
3. All fuses related to ignition are okay.
Something does not add up. Seeing RPM on crack means I CPK works and I get a spark. Smelling fuel means I got fuel (> 1/4 tank). Any ideas?
Thank you,

Fuel pressure could be too low. Check pressure on fuel rail.
or, try to turn ignition to 2nd position 5 times before trying to actually crank engine. Theory is you will build up full rail pressure by cycling the ignition before starting.

No codes related to ignition, fuel pump. Once in a while I get a code related to a cat (0430) and that's about it. My LTFT is high in both banks--need to reset fuel mappings.
If the fuel pressure is low, what am I dealing with? Clogged filter? Faulty fuel pump? I presume those are not DIY jobs...

Why wouldnt those be DIY?
There is no fuel filter on the D2 or so i have been told -- fuel pump is under the carpet in the rear, couple of bolts and you've got it out. There is a schrader valve off of the fuel hard line -- get a tester and see what the pressure is and go from there.

Try this, turn the key to position two, then off, position two then off, and then try to crank it. If it fires right up you have a weak fuel pump or possibly an injector leaking which is causing the fuel rail to loose pressure.
If you have an SAI equipped D2 a new fuel pump off of Ebay is right at 50.00 for the entire unit. Takes maybe 30min to swap out.

It was the fuel pump. The pressure was too low, about 4PSI. Turning the key into the II position multiple times did nothing. What we learned today:
1. Keep the UltraGauge plugged in to check the RPMs.
2. Get a fuel pressure gauge.

nice follow up. Glad that you got it sorted
