It can be a real pain, but there's good reason for it in SLC with the inversion that happens. It would probably be cheaper for me to find a pre-1992 300TDI Defender in the UK and import it, but damnit I'm hard headed.

Hypothetical, you could just gut the entire system i suppose and put in your own brakes, your own basic A/C system, find a way to get it to be a 5 speed from an auto trans, drop what ever motor you want in there, make what ever is needed to go from the trans to the transfer case and have a good reliable running rig right?

True, you could. However I think it will be easier to play nice with the other components. As long as the computer knows what gear the transmission is in and the RPMs of the engine it should shift ok. The catching point there is that V8 revs higher than any diesel is likely to, so there will need to be some testing. The A/C doesn't care, so it won't be a big deal at all, just have to mount the compressor to the engine block.

But the Cummins Repower is carb legal swap that will currently pass emissions in 1994 and older vehicles. I think they are working on additional certs to like 1999 and older. It has OBD port, ECU, and emissions built it. You just put exhaust on it, have it inspected at Air Car (with appointment for swap inspection) and as long as required components are there and it's running right it should pass. Getting the adapter in place is the part I'm interested in for my 1992 RRC.

Noob here. Found this searching for another thread with similar goals.
Looks like a 1999 disco 1 is being done in ABQ Nm. I was searching as I have always liked the 03-4 disco 2s but not a huge fan of the engines. And was considering getting one to swap a Cummins into.
Heres the link that I found.

Do you have a buddy that lives outside of the front range? I had a friend who lives in Gunnison and we'd register cars through his parents address so we can bypass emissions.

That being said, Cummins is legal in CO. Hell, there's a Cummins sales & service center in Arvada, I'd ask them for reputable shops that are able to do this as I'm sure they've seen crazier swaps. Once my engine blows I'm looking into this as well.

Emissions in many states like NM where I am is no issue, just go to MVD and tell them it's a diesel and they will change it. No more emissions, but the R2.8 is emissions compliant up to 99 I know in 49 or 50 states. I can't remember.

This is an interesting thread. I hope you do it and track the details -- you'll be blazing new territory if you manage it but unless it turns into a real money pit, you probably won't be the last. Any rough guesses of costs yet? What sort of mpg is this expected to get?

I'm curious on the mpgs as well. I'm in search of a ford 5.0 that will net me a hopeful 18 mpg and pay for itself in 3 years.

Well at this point I am going to do it.... but just not sure when. I know the RePowerToy gets low 20s consistently with 4.10 gears and 35s. But if you look at that truck it's tall.
I am already working with some guys on adapters....
If I do the build I'll be posting it on repowerowners.com
