Default Different Head Gasket issue

Had an indie mechanic look at replacing the crank speed sensor. He said coolant was dripping on it and that it meant an HG replacement. There's no coolant in the crankcase, no smoke, temp is right between the goalposts but there is definitely a small coolant leak.

Question: If this is an HG problem, it certainly seems like no cylinder is compromised. I'm not getting misfires or any of the other "gaskety" symptoms. The crank speed sensor is down by the crank (naturally) and it seems that the coolant would have to follow a pretty twisty path to get there from a gasket leak, although it's clearly not outside the realm of possibility. The coolant loss is pretty slow.

I've checked most of the threads and haven't seen this type of leak. The DII has 120K on it which puts it in HG replacement range, but it seems unusual to me and I was wondering if anyone had experience with this or if it could be something else that wouldn't take a week of evenings or $2500 to fix.

I truly love this forum. Don't know what I'd do without it.

Seems possible, but not likely.
Wash the engine, look for the leak again in a week.
$2500 is high, $1500 is more like it.

If it's leaking out the back of the gasket, then absolutely. With the leak there, its more likely heads the intake, as intake would generally get into the crankcase too. Seen it leak like this many times.

"right between the goal posts" will hit you hard. The oem temp gauge points at 50% from about 130 - 240F. A scanner or Ultra Gauge will show you the truth.

X2 on rear leak.

probably the o-ring is bad on the coolant pipe which
goes into the intake manifold

coolant then flows down from above

Thanks all. I'll ask the shop if the pressure-tested the system to verify the leak. I can still return the vehicle, since it's within 30 days and this is Massachusetts. Hoping to keep it, since most everything else (except the usual LR issues) is great. Body & interior are perfect. If the dealer will spring for the HG replacement, I'm good to go. Will pull timing cover, clean throttle body and other stuff at the same time.

Massachusetts lemon laws also has mileage limitations and I think they end at 100k, unless it does not pass inspection.
I mean even in a state as liberal as Mass. you can expect someone to warranty a car that has a million miles on it for 30-days.

Dave -

Didn't quite understand what you meant regarding the intake. Could you clarify?

Thanks
