Default Disco 4.6 VS RR p38 4.6 specs

Just curious on the similarities of these 2 blocks! Can I easily swap out to the RR 4.6. Im reading that the RR 4.6 didnt have the slipped sleeve issue like the Disco 4.0-4.6 blocks do. Are the bores the same as well? Thanks for any info.

I have a gems 4.6 with ZF 4hp24 trans and 04 locking TC in my 2001. There is a bit of extra length to this setup (maybe in the trans?) and I had to lengthen the trans and T-case mount holes by about 1/2". It's a tight fit ..... I really think that the engine mounts were off sending the whole setup back a bit...

In an 04, that block should fit should fit no issues. the Gems casting is considered better by most. I looked at the machining of the lifter bores and they seemed to be well centered in the casting. As far as cylinder wall thickness, or head stud hole depth...who knows if it was done correctly.....

So from your experience do you think that I could just swap over the pistons, crank and heads and bolt directly to the trans?

HP24 is like 1/2 an inch longer vs the HP22. A 4.0/4.6L LR V8 is identical no matter if it's a D2 or P38, but usually the P38 got the better quality engines.

Plenty of P38's died the same way a D2 can, but usually most RR owners just dropped it off to have a new engine installed vs a D2 owner which tried some HG sealant & then tossed a For Sale sign on it where it passed thru several owners before ending up at LKQ on isle F to be pillaged over until it's sent to LR heaven aka the crusher.

@Best4x4 that was a very clean explanation of the D2 vs RRC life cycle

why swap everything over...do you have access to a clean Gems block? AB or Junkyard?

Yep they were treated differently unless the owner of the D1/D2 also owned a Range Rover or Defender. Not saying all D1/D2 owners treated their vehicles like crap, but most went to people that bought a D1/D2 for the LR badge/Range Rover type image. Then the ones that couldn't afford a D1/D2 went with a Freelander and we know how little of those are still driving around in the USA today lol.
