Ha.

Well I woke up thinking "what was I thinking?" about my radiator fix. It will probably fail in sub-zero temperature in Jan. So a new radiator is on order from parts geek.

I was hoping you would decide to do that. Better to do it the right way the first time around.

I hope that you are making your son do all kinds of work around the house After he's done cleaning the rain gutters, cutting your lawn, and any other dirty job you've been putting off, have him help you replace all these parts so he can learn something. I'm sure some day his son will be destroying his truck. It's the circle of life.
I've got some stories of my own from the damage I caused and my Dad had to fix. It's funny now, but I wasn't laughing back then.

Default Radiator removed!

Well, I decided to take the old radiator out today while waiting for the new one to arrive. After reading just about every thread on the subject, I decided to ignore the RAVE manual approach and use the "remove air box and battery box" approach. The primary benefit is that it seemed easier and did not involve disconnecting the oil lines which I wanted to avoid doing at all costs. I followed the pics in this thread:

https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...uestion-58055/

Great success! It took me about 1 hour to get it all out and about 30 minutes of that was dealing with a single nut that was stripped and would not loosen. Now that I've done it once, I could do it the second time around very quickly. It was no where near as hard as I had imagined.

The tool of the hour was this little 90deg ratcheting screw driver that I have that allowed me to un-screw the screws bolting the oil coolers to the radiator. See pic below. Made the job a breeze.

Of course the money pit issue continues since I discovered that my battery was leaking and was covered in all kinds of residue. I never changed it since I got the truck, so I need a new battery. Will it ever end?

Also put a brand new belt.

You can remove the radiator without removing the battery box, air box and coolers. I don't understand why you need to remove the battery and air box. All the bolts and screws are accessible from the front.

well, keep in mind that I've never done this, so I chose one way to do it that was documented here on the forums.

It seems like you either remove the air box and battery box, or you remove the front grill and horns to get to the radiator screws. I did not want to remove the grill, so I choose to go the battery and air box route and keep the grill in place.

Now that I've done it, I can see that if one had a very long phillips screwdriver, you could do it from the front without removing the grill or air box or battery box but you'd be fishing in the dark in terms of getting the screw driver to align with the screws and I'm not sure how you'd get them back on again.

A few plastic screws at the top and the grill just lifts right out, horns are one nut on each but, you got it done, that's all that matters.
So I see you checked the water pump for play, did you ever check the motor mounts? I'm still wondering what caused all of this to happen in the first place. Do you think the fan just cracked and broke? I don't think it would have broken that much if it had just cracked and flew apart. I think something hit it or it hit something!
Good going on your work so far! For someone who's never worked on one at least you are getting it done!

Thanks! RAVE says there are also screws on the side of the grill on 99-02 so you have to take out side blinkers, trim under the head lights to reach those screws. It seemed like a wash. I'm happy I did it my way, if not I would have never checked the battery. My air box was already out since it got broken, so it really only meant removing the battery.

I still need to check the motor mounts. It is on my todo list. The one thing I have realized by taking everything apart and ordering parts is that my original fan shroud was not intact to begin with and kind of fubar. The new fan shroud protects the fan much more than whatever I had before this even happened. So I still suspect something (likely a hose) fell on the fan.

I would, just to know. Easier to get to with fan, shroud, radiator and all that out of the way, if you did have to change one out.
Sorry, I wasn't aware of any screws in the sides, neither of mine has those.. and yea whatever's easiest for ya! good you caught the battery. Hope you figure it out! Good luck!
