Default Discovery II Sport Mode

I am assuming either the sport mode indicator light in the instrument cluster or sport mode switch is bad in my 2001 Discovery II. Is there an easy way to diagnose which is the problem?

Sport mode - GREEN
Illuminates for 3 seconds as a bulb check when the starter switch is
turned to position ‘II’. Illuminates constantly while Sport mode is selected.
Is bulb check good? Does the Sport mode work? You should be able to easily tell while driving.

No mechanical symptoms really. Just trying to figure out if the light is burn out on the dash or if the mode switch is broke. I need to be able to rule out either a dash indicator light not working or the switch not working to know which one to fix

ok I see... no the light does not illuminate at start up or position II. The manual M does. So i am assuming that means the bulb is out

What number9 posted. With the ignition off, just switch the key to the on position and all the dash lights will light up for 3 seconds. On the bottom row there should be a green S with a cog around it. If it lights up, the bulb is fine. If it doesn't light up then the bulb is burnt out.

Ok I am not the original owner so help me figure this out, I opened up the dash took out the instrument cluster and to find that the previous owner had placed a piece of black electrical tape over the Sport mode "S" light only. Why would they do that? The M still illuminates. Why blackout that light? Removed the tape and switch and light appear to work as they should.

Why blackout that light?
When using SM some find the indicator light annoying while driving at night as I do.

"Sport Mode"

I drive in Sport Mode a lot, especially in hilly areas. I could see where that light would annoy some at night.
