I have a similar problem in my Disco 98 automatic 4.0L V8, I was driving on mud, I hit a hole and at the same time someone pull the emergency brake accidentally. when I tried to drive again, the eng rev but it does not drive (it was shifted on D), I shifted to 1 and it drive again, then I shifted to 2 and good, the shifted to D and every good. but if I stop the car, happen the same so I need to start over 1,2,D. the trans shift smooth, no problem, just that I need to start driving on 1 the switch 2 and D. any ideas???

And you might want to review the RAVE about the automatic transmission XYZ switch, it is mounted on side of tranny and may have been knocked out of adjustment, or full of gunk. It is in the attached drawing.

The Xyz switch did not fix my problem. I bought a used transmission and installed it. That was fun...... Anyway, I have not yet pulled the oltd tranni apart to see what failed.

The DI does NOT have a XYZ switch.

Start by changing your trans fluid, if it got water in it it can cause problems.
Might be a good idea to change the filter too.
If that does not do the trick you need a power flush with a special solvent to clean up the gunk that has accumulated inside the valve body of the transmission.
If it still does not work right you need a new transmission.
