Default Door check strap

Hi guys. A year or so ago I removed the pin that connects a door check strap with the body because of the loud popping sound when opening and closing (the piece attached to the body is loose). Recently I tried to fix it by using JB Weld SteelStik but it didn't work. Is welding my only option in this situation?

Yes, welding would be the best fix, besides replacing door, but replacement would only be if it was unweldable (rust or cracked beyond repair). Just find a shop that specializes in welding, they'd be able to correct this.

I did this a couple of years ago. Hard stainless plate. Cut it on a bandsaw, filed clean. Range Rover clevis. Bolted the clevis to the plate. Riveted the plate to the door frame.

To sustain my clean record in terms of self-reliance in fixing my Rover I was thinking about fixing it myself. I was thinking about renting/buying a welder and fixing it but there is one small problem... I never welded before. I am a quick learner though. How hard would it be to fix it for someone without any prior experience with welding?

Welding thin steel is quite difficult, especially if you don’t want it to look like crap

I can weld - that’s why I opted to rivet a plate.

Tony never mentioned it, but I figured out that the "clevis" he used is part number ALR3733, from the P38 RR.

I hope this helps anyone looking into doing this fix.

Excellent fix. Though I've had the driver's door welded at my local body shop (did a nice job, including refinishing the jamb), I'll keep this idea and the part # (thanks TimInNova) for future reference.
