End All answer to stupid oil questions.

I don't want to sound goofy, but I just joined this forum, as I was/am having issues with a newly purchased 03 Discovery. Ive read a bunch of posts, and posted one myself. I got great feedback, and I'm pretty sure I have the problems isolated now. But it's the feedback, and postings, and the sharing of information and experience that goes on here, that you all should be proud of. Ive had two Range Rovers, and this is my first Discovery. It seems to be a whole other beast! Mostly what I am getting though, is with a little guidance, the right tools, some sense, and caution, there is a lot you can do to manage the expense of owning one of these, offsetting it by doing many things yourself. Correct??? And I'm pretty excited to play a more active role in the management of my vehicle's mechanicals.
So riddle me this, where in the wild world of sports is the Knock sensor located on an 03 Discovery? I read in the "RAVE" manuel that it's near the starter??? A picture of one on the engine wouldn't hurt. And lastly, is this a job anyone can do? The part it's self looks pretty basic, but is there a specific amount of torqe that has to be applied in puttingthis thing on, ect. ect. ect???

Your own post would also be responded to, in The Rave there is the circuits manual. Look up part on wiring diagram, there are tiny connector numbers. Go to electrical library and most connectors have a page with wiring pinouts and photo of location. Yours is attached. Has good view of starter, be sure cables are clean and tight. Would appear exhaust manifold removed for this pix. And this engine is so clean you wonder if the owner has ever been out of the showroom.
Knock sensor on each side of engine, and must be tight, a mis-mounted sensor is not good. Don't confuse with oil pressure sender on same side, at front, higher up.

Taking my Disco II in for an oil change tomorrow, they guy said they use 10w-30 full synthetic...I dont know what to do or say. Any recommendations? It is a legit Land Rover tech place...Should I ask for a particular oil? Thank you!
I'd ask for Shell Rotella.
WalMart and auto parts stores and truck stops sell it, about $12 a gallon, 15W40 conventional, also comes in 5W40 synthetic. If you look at the oil chart in the Rover manual, 10W30 is rated for use only up to 90F. You really want the "40" on the end.
Here's a pix of a Rover engine at about 190,000 run on Castrol (to start with) and Shell Rotella, with logical oil change intervals (5,000 or less). And one that wasn't. And they guy who wins when you do oil changes at 7,500, 15,000, 25,000, or just when you feel like it.
Change early (before the factory spec - which was invented by ad weasels) and often.

Rotella 15W40 conventional, if in an area with temps below 15F consider 5W40 synthetic Rotella. Check your shop manual, 10W30 only rated for use up to 90F. Main thing is change at 3,000 - 5,000 intervals. Not 7500 or higher.
If in an area where Rotella is not sold, seek out a high quality diesel truck oil. The lads in a lorry will know where to buy it.

this is excellent!!!!.... any suggestions on oil of choice for a 4.6 Atlantic British and/or RPI engine (rebuilt) with around 23,000 miles?
