Exactly.
IMO, even with a stock filter it's unlikely to get clogged with dirt if you change your oil and filter as specified. But the real concern is it opening during normal operation, cold oil and strong acceleration, because of the higher pressure differential requirement.
With a 36 PSI, when an 8 PSI filter is specified, you're going to get oil starvation for a longer period of time until the differential pressure reaches the filter bypass setting. Look at the Rover oil system specs and compare to the 36psi L40316.

The one thing I observed with last oil change was my oil aftr 3400 miles was really black n dirty and i was using the K&N 3001 ... What is the bypass on that one? Maybe i wasnt cleaning oil well and running dirty since im using T6 oil...

Is it starving or just getty unfiltered oil with the differential pressure? Seems like if it was starving you would have low oil pressure light coming on when you raced up the expressway ramp attempting to reach merge speed.

I'd like to start using the Baldwin, but the B74 is kinda small, 20 PSI bypass, do thay have a larger capacity in the 3/4 X 16 thread?

My oil light goes right out when starting .. Not even a second on at startup i dont think... And it never comes on while idling or driving or anytime while running... So im assming i have plenty of pressure. Im just wondering if this new filter may be a good move for me since it will not bypass until 36psi my observation was not cruddy but seemed realy black when changing .... I guess its possible that thre is a problem with filter since my glowshift guage occassionally bounces around when idling from 8-10 but seems last oil change it would idle hot right at 12...

Also when racing up expressway ramp which i never do very hard since gas is retardedly expensive lol i am at peak pressure around 50 ish ? As gears change, oil pressure changes, so thats why i added the "ish" lol

So I would take it that the increased WOT and pressure pushes the filter bpass valve to "bypass media" position, you get full oil pressure the gear pump will produce (it has a relief valve of its own that dumps excess back to pan)

I guess another question might be what the ideal range of idle pressure is, so that with an oil gauge you could identify a clogged filter early. Certainly if at hot idle you have same 40+ PSI as high rpm, when warmed up, then that would indicate trouble somewhere. Of course, Rover does not wish us to be concerned with such things, just an oil light will do.

Yup... Im thking mine is a ok and maybe the super thin oil of the T6 is reason i have 8-10psi at hot idle maybe thats normal? ... Ironically i see oil here and there under disco but nary a drip on the parking lot and im assuming being an 03 i was lucky snd didnt get a bad pump even though im in the vin range lol im at 94k now

The oil pressure light doesn't come on until about 3-6 psi.
Idle minimum pressure is 10psi
Hot 2000rpm pressure is 50psi
I'm assuming these figures are for a new engine.
Assuming a pump with a lot of miles might not be meeting those specs, you could very well not be getting a good flow because the 36 PSID is so great the bypass won't even open if you have zero on one side.
With the OE PSID of 8-11 it will nearly always open, if required, even at idle.

I use the B2, same size as the Wix 51515.

Thanks. But the B74 is the Rover spec for Balwin's compatibility list, and has the 20 PSI bypass rating. The B2 has an 8 PSI rating. The Wix 51515 is 8-11.

I don't know why Baldwin lists that. Every other OE size I've seen for the Rover v8 is 8-11psi. If you do a cross lookup from the Wix 51068 (for example), which is what they specify, you get the Baldwin B233, which is 8psi.
