End All answer to stupid oil questions.
How do you feel about the Lucas oil stabilizer. I want to run the 5w 40 or 15 w 40 but already purchased a but load of 5w 30 si motor oil. I find the starting up in the morning is a bit ragged with the lite weight oil so the 15w 40 cj oil soulds great. Lucas oil seems to help. or should i go ahead and run the 15w40 cj and use the 5w 30 sh in my other car?
. I wouldn't use it in a Rover unless I was in snow country in the winter.

Sorry but my PC won'rt show what you are looking at with that large post. Are you looking for an oil filter? From what source? Which web site?
This thread started with the Purolator 40316, which is a re-boxed MANN W950/4, which I run on my D1. There are other jumbo filters, from brands like Baldwin and Wix, the advantage is greater oil capacity. A filter should be priced where you are not tempted to run more than 5000 miles between oil changes. Many also use the Mobile 1 filter. There are all sorts of reports on types of bypass valves, etc. The Fram seem to be more cardboard and and ad dollars. But the main thing is a new filter every oil change, and don't make Rover wait. The 7500 - 15,000 mile changes are a product of the ad department. The diesel rated oils have more cleaning and Rotellla has lots of ZDDP which is good for flat tappet engines. It is not modern engine. It is a 1963 Buick Skylark engine with electronics added to satisfy the various regulatory agencies. Back in the 60's people changed oil every 1000 - 3000, and a truck was considered worn out at 50,000.

Well I went to pick up some of the Rotella 15w40 and order one of the two different filters L40316 (High bypass pressure) or L40107 (low Bypass pressure)
I was going to go with the Low pressure filter.
However after the parts guy looked it up it appears that they are discontinuing that particular filter and they cannot order them anymore.
I did manage to find a couple online but they were north of $20
The High pressure filter is still available so that's the one I went with.
looks like that may answer the question as to which one to get unless you decide on another brand.

In fact, given the Rover V8 lubrication system specs, your engine could be oil starved even under near ideal conditions if the filter is dirty enough.

Keep in mind that with a higher bypass pressure your engine can be oil starved for a longer period of time if conditions are less than ideal.

I thought the bypass valve did just that, bypass the filter media depending on pressure drop, blockage, etc. So a dirty filter won't stop oil flow, it just stops the filter process. The bypass valve also operates at WOT accelerations, racing, etc. I think a filter that is clogged AND has a stuck valve would starve the oil.
So with a Mobile1 filter run until clogged, or any other brand, continues to flow unfiltered oil. But with the price you paid for the Mobile 1 and the synthetic oil you keep driving for another 15,000 miles with no filter....
Good quality filter and oil, and change early and often like voting in Chicago. Rover says under certain arduous conditions oil may have to be changed daily. Sounds like fun to me!
Exactly how does a bypass valve work? - Bob Is The Oil Guy
Pix of arduous conditions and results of poor oil change habits combined with blocked PCV system.
Fuel for thought - does a high cleaning oil Like Rottela, in an older engine, remove so much sludge that the filter media becomes clogged early and the filter stays in bypass mode?
