Default engine swap

hello, I have a 99 discovery 2 with a 4.0l v8
it has approximately 250,000 miles on it and is getting a little tired. Im curious if anyone can give me any motor recommendations. I looked at a 5.3 but they seem a little overpowered for this small of a vehicle. I can do all the work myself just looking for a good motor swap recommendation. The last thing i want to do is put another land rover motor in it but i will if thats the best. any input is appreciated thanks.

There’s an Engine Swap section in this forum. LS engines seem to be a popular swap.

If you're looking to do a complete swap to another power plant, the road has been paved for LS. A 5.3 to most suits the vehicle very well, but if you're looking for less motor the 4.8 LS is an option and the swap would otherwise be exactly the same.

A 5.3 in a 5500 lbs SUV is not underpowered.

I just wish the 6l80e and/or 8l90e transmissions we're equally compatible with the conversion kit black box.

The 5.3 swap itself may net you an added mpg or three.

But the 4x4 1500 crew cab trucks with the 6 and 8 speeds are hitting into the lower to mid 20s around in city/town mix driving. Having 33 inch tires and 3 inches of lift in a Rover will likely make 20mpgs around town best possible. But 87 octane fill ups plus an added 4 to 5 mpg would help recoup some of the money you'll spend doing the conversion. Still loads cheaper than buying a used 2020 1500/Tahoe/etc
the LS parts and reliability alone make the swap worth while. Being able to hang in the passing lane up hill will also be an enormous perk.

Off road you'll sound cool and break stuff more often if you're any sort of heavy with the skinny pedal.

I'd like to see a disco 2 with a well tuned 5.3/8l80e/fj60 split case and 35s rolling on e locker fj80 axles.

As much as the 80 was a nice rig the disco 1 and 2 look better.

being that you got 250000 with an LR engine, that would be the impetus to replace with same....plus install is way easier.... If you want to rebuild an RR 4.6 99-02 with top hat and new cam and some miminal porting..that could be the bit more power you are looking for....or rebuild your 4.0 w/4.6 crank....and cost/effort would be less...
