Sure a diesel will fit a D1 if you want to spend the $7000 plus to do it.
What is wrong with your engine?

...look at my reply in your "Engine Tapping" thread.

To answer your question here: a diesel will "fit" but I use that term very loosely. You will also be changing out your entire fuel and engine management systems, and countless other things. The only way I would ever do this, is by buying a wrecked diesel disco to use as donor. If you are in the US, like me, than you would have to import it as well - lots of $$. Not to offend you, but if you are having to ask this question you probably shouldn't be doing this kind of a project just yet Fixing the tapping will be much, much easier...Piotr

LR 200Tdi or 300Tdi will fit, cos that's what we get in the UK.

Mazda/Perkins 4206 (I think the numbers right)will fit in a RR so should fit a Disco. You need an adapter for the g/box.

200Tdi is said to be stronger, mine's coming up to 170k miles, starts on the button without the heaters even in the winter.

Head was off at 160k for the 1st time after the harmonic balancer cracked, all the pumps stoppedand it boiledquite nicely.

The engine still sounds sweet although my wife would have you believe it sounds like something out of an old Massey Ferguson.

Mine is auto and when cold is gutless after 5 minutes running, it's fine. You won't win any races tho.

Regards
Tim

A diesel engine swap requires a engine, tranny, t/case, fuel sytem and a new ECU. I have a couple of friends who have done this and the end result is great but way way too expensive.

Here is a good plave to look for a used engine. You might want to pull the valve covers and see where the noise is coming from before you go blow a bunch on a new engine.

Good luck,
