Can anyone tell me if the 4.0L engine in a Disco 1 is the same as the 4.0L in a 97 Range Rover? I'm looking at a Range Rover on ebay with a bad engine and I'm thinking about bidding on it if there's no significant difference between the two. I can understand if the exhaust manifold and engine mounts might have to be swapped.

No. The Rangie has a Bosch engine like a D2. Block and heads are the same, but you will have to swap the front cover, timing set and knock sensors.

 

I was just at the dealer picking up some parts and asked the guy in the service department about it and he said it's a direct swap. I don't have to change anything. Tempting.....

I would double check on the front cover....It would suck to have to swap after swapping the engine. I was wrong about it being bosch, that is what changes the timing set, but I would still check the cover.

 

Just look at the manifold to see if the Rangie engine is a Bosch or not, that is the biggest deciding factor.

 

Mike, is the front cover the same on a RR gems 4.0 and a Disco 4.0?
