Get the splice kit at Home Depot, in the electrical department. You can find it with the crimp tools, butt connectors, coaxial connectors, etc...

OP, thanks for this post. I checked my wiring this weekend and it was close to the exhaust. Had I not seen this post and checked maybe I would've suffered the damage on my disco.
I also took a good look around other wiring and found some that needed to be zip tied to prevent contact with hot engine parts. If, you haven't already done so, check your wiring.

Please - only solder!
never crimp.
If you insist on crimps, then solder the crimp after..

You should solder and have heat shrink tubing on it ready to be moved into place and shrunk on.

the battery was fried. i still need to check it but the D1 battery works great in it.

soo all the small wires were soldered. 7 maybe.

the big was not soldered. it was partially cut and he didnt want to complete the cut and clean it because he would lose the "backbone" of the wire and many of the strands were still intact. he "put it back together" and rubber taped it and there seems to be no problem.

Should I make him redo it and solder it?

Glad you other guys are checking this on your rigs. Do you check the hard cooling system lines? You could learn from my huge FU if you replace them early.
