Default Front crank seal install

Folks,

Last summer I changed rod bearings, oil pump, water pump, bla bla bla.
I also replaced the front crank seal with a genuine LR seal, which was leaking right after the repair.

I did not use the official LR install tool for the seal installation, LR-12-089.

I am going back into the truck soon to replace crank main bearings and want to fix the leaking front crank seal.

1. Should I buy the official tool for $100 (uuugghhh)
2. Can I make a tool?

Any advice appreciated, just want to get it right the 2nd time.

thanks in advance!

Ed

So I have the tool and I found uses for it other than specifically the front seal.

I finally used it on the front seal and it was nice to grab, press the seal in, and not think twice about the fitment. Peace of mind versus using a makeshift socket or flat bushing press kit. Bushing press kit or sockets I believe would totally be feasible, and the tool is probably not needed at all. But don’t trust me as I am a laymen still for these vehicles.

Hope that helps.

Pretty easy to make the crank pulley tool, I drilled 2 sets of holes to use it on my Tacoma too. Check the crank for wear, you might need to get a speedi-sleev

I don't use a tool, just put some silicone on the od and tap it in with a hammer around the perimeter.

I had the same issue and I found out that the shaft was worn. Put on a sleeve or get a new pulley. I did not use any special tools. PVC fitting from the hardware store for $2.39 or something like that to push the seal in and air impact wrench to get the nut off. Tightened by blocking the flywheel.

My mechanic just pushes seals in with his thumbs. He has a great feel for it after thousands of vehicle repairs.
