Front Driveshaft
I need to replace my front driveshaft as I hear these are prone to failure and Im getting a humming/whinning noise at high speeds - no vibrations though. I checked atlantic british and they are $800. Is there a cheaper source or method?!?! thanks in advance.
By all means---do replace the u-joints now. The only other things to fail are the splined slip-joint, but this is usually due to the shaft running for some time with an unbalance due to sloppy u-joints. The front flange can also be damaged beyond use from the u-joint cups "pounding out" the flange right before failure.
Bottom line is that if the u-joint are suspect, replace them now. It's not pretty when they fail at speed---at can be very expensive to repair the resultant damage.

I just replaced my front and rear driveshaft u-joints. The front u-joints in the double joint were about to break. For some reason Land Rover didn't put grease fittings in these ones. All the greasable joints were still good. I went ahead and changed them anyways because my Discovery has 97,000 miles on it. I went with greasable Precision 344 u-joints from Napa. The double joints are pretty tricky to get out. I ended up welding a bolt onto one of the bearing caps and pulled it into a big socket with a nut. Put marks on everything so you get everything oriented the way it was. There is a needle bearing in between the double joint, be careful you don't loose any pins. I stuffed a couple earplugs into the bearing to keep them all in. Also check the rubber roto-flex coupler for cracks. When they go bad they cause a lot of vibration. Shucks has a rebuilt driveshaft for $261.00 with a core. I dont' know what kind of u-joints it has.
