Default Front Driveshaft Out...CDL only moves to center position

Moves freely to the first click, but refuses to go to the second click to lock.

Any ideas?

You may not have CDL on your 2000 model year. Have you checked to see if you actually have the CDL engage/disengage nipple on the top of the transfer case? This is circled in the pic below.

At this point it doesn’t matter which of the three positions it is in neither driveshaft flange will rotate and when putting the tranny in park it makes a grinding sound.

inhad this happen years ago when shifting from high to low range and the transfer case gear mesh got off.i don’t remember what I did to fix.

That's a clear indication the T-case is in neutral. Turn one of the flanges by hand (engine off) while you turn the selector. If it won't go into high or low, that could mean the selector fork inside is trashed.
