Hi all,

our '04 Disco II will only fill up to 3/4 at the pump. The pump clicks off as if it has filled up, but the gauge only reads 3/4. I assume it is either a gauge issue, or some problem with the fuel storage system. I have not run it dry, and would rather not jump to that troubleshooting method right off the bat. I understand there is a vent line leading from the tank up to the inlet side of the filler assembly that may be clogged? How do I remove the filler assembly to check this? Also where can I get a shop manual for the 2004 Disco II???

What was the gas gauge reading when you filled up? How much gas did you put in? You have 3 gallons left when the light comes on so there's no need to run it dry, and the tank holds ~24.5 gallons. To be safe I assume 24 gallons when doing estimates. Get a copy of the RAVE manual.

 

This has happened twice now, both times the tank was around 1/4, and I put about 10 gals into it.

 

most likely the fuel sending unit in the tank is bad or the float is getting stuck. Reading only 3/4 full when the tank is actually full. Not very common to be the gauge. Not uncommon on any make vehicle.

 

It sounds to me like your tank vent is clogged. 10 gallons in a 24 gallon tank that reads 1/4 wouldn't bring it to full. That should bring you up to just about 3/4. Have you attempted to top it off after the pump clicks off? Try pulling the nozzle out to allow it to vent through the filler neck then reinsert and try it again.

 

I second the tank vent. Try filling the tank slowly too, that might indicate the same thing.
