The Great Head Gasket Adventure
See what I am dealing with? WHERE IS THE DAMN NUT?! The nut is inside the bell of the pulley! How do I get to it to loosen it? The best suggestion I can come up with (other than the one that involved C4) is that I remove the water pump with the fan on it still in the hopes that once I get it out I will be better able to work with it, perhaps cut the pulley in half with a cut off wheel or drill out the bolts from the back side. I take out the bolts on the pulley and it all comes apart right? Then it is a simple matter to re thread the holes and get new bolts from local hardware store, correct?
thanks guys
P.S. does it occur to anyone else that I am the only person who has these kinds of situatiations as an occurance of daily life?

Not really, the guys who designed and built the motor in the first place..and put the fan on correctly...well the motor is still a big Fu$cking POS... so dont feel bad....
Maybe? Would save you from having to cut something you would have to pay $ to replace.
get a heat gun or blow torch and carefully (very carefully) heat the sensor on the front of the clutch. It may just lock up enough to be able to unscrew the assembly by hand. It shouldn't need much more than a soft heat - enough to expand that coil thing!
- just rember the fan is plastic! you only need to heat that coil in the middle of the clutch. And if you burn it to the ground don't blame me. LOL

Yes I remember the warning about the beer at the start of the thread. <insert I TOLD YOU SO here>
I figure that it took a special kind of idiot to pull catastrophic failure out of the teeth of absolute success in this manner.
So wednesday the other h2o pump gasket gets here from AB and I am going to take the water pump off with the fan assembly still attached. I will drop the whole assembly off at the machine shop where I got the heads done. Hopefully he will be able to drill out the old bolts, reverse the pulley into the correct orientation, and then rethread the bolt holes for me.
I am quite proud of myself for getting the entire rover engine reassembled though. My wife was betting against me.

Since you may end up cutting the pulley apart anyway, try drilling a 5/16 inch hole in the pulley belt face about where the nut flanges would align. Pick up a quality 1/4 inch pin punch, put a point on it with a grinder, then slide it through the hole and strike the nut flange in so it turns counter clockwise from the front. Perhaps hold the pulley with a strap wrench if it jerks. Spray a bit of penetrating oil in as well.
The small hole shouldn't affect the strength or balance, and you may need more than one to get the right angle on the nut. Best of luck.
