The Great Head Gasket Adventure
Ok i admit i have the RAVE manual handy (dont tell my wife please). I started to print the whole thing to put into a binder to keep in the rover until i realize it is 1500+ pages long. Today I stopped after I got the IM removed. I am at the limit of my mechanical abilities and I ran out of beer. My mechanically inclined friend is coming over this weekend to assist me with the portions that require an IQ of more than 33 to do. I know my limits.
I knew when I started this today that I was going to mess up and I knew that I would learn some POOP too. I have done both. I also never planned to get into the complicated portions of the teardown w/o competent help .
I took POOP tons of pictures and have about 15 ziplock baggies with sharpie labels on them to organize me when I go to put stuff back; great idea BTW, props to whomever suggested that one.
I appreciate all the assistance and remember; that there were several beers killed in the making of these posts.
more to come;
brian

Don't sweat it...You sound much more qualified than the idiots that designed it in the first place... maybe they should have had beer and actually then turned out somthing other than the pile they made...POOP..

keep us updated, Chris
Yeah, you can use a little dielectric on all your connections. It's more like vaseline, I don't think I've ever seen it in a spray can. It's not going to completely waterproof your connections, but it will help. You can buy electrical component cleaner in a spray can for a couple bucks at any auto parts store.
ok, so the name of the gasket under the manifold is ..wait for it; MANIFOLD GASKET. who would have guessed?
Anyway, since it is a metal (?) type material do I just clean it up and put it back or do I need to order a replacement? RTV gasket stuff maybe? A little help here pls.
Dielectric grease - apply just like vaseline. Ok got it. Available at autozone I take it?
possible dumb question: what is the difference between a normal socket and an impact socket? Other than it being on an impact gun?

The metal part you are looking at is not the manifold gasket, that's just a piece that holds the gasket in place. You need a new gasket, any gasket you remove needs to be replaced with a new - otherwise you will be back doing it all over again.
Impact sockets are built tougher than normal sockets, don't try using a normal socket in an impact driver. You get impact sockets that are shallower than normal sockets, so in the case where you have to apply more force in say undoing a head bolt, it does not tend to want to slip off the bolt as much as a normal socket does.

Got it - go to harbor freight and get a 35 impact socket set in 1/2" shaft. metric type.
I am getting my butt kicked by the removal of the fan. I have a pair of x-large channel locks on the nut that is on the fan shaft batween the pulley and the fan blade but where to I put the other wrench to turn against it? I checked the RAVE manual but the pic didnt help much.
thanks

put an open-ended wrench or an adjustable wrench on it, make sure that it is tight. Then using a rubber mallet, give it a good whack in the counter clockwise direction. That should break it loose. Good luck. You will have fits trying to get it off with the channel locks and you may bugger up the nut. Phil

The fan is tough there is no spot for a second wrench, you need a clutch fan holder like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Schle...ht_1487wt_1167
or this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OTC-4...s#ht_500wt_956
and a 36mm wrench:

I built a spanner you can search for my post. Also some have had luck with a pipe wrench. Also you can squeeze your PAS pump between the blades but it is easier with the fan off.

"put an open-ended wrench or an adjustable wrench on it," WHAT THE F!CK IS "it" ?!
are you refering to the nut or the pulley itself? That is the piece of information that I need. I think...
If I put the adjustable wrench on the nut do I hold the fan while I hit the wrench or what?
thanks guys

on the nut between the fan and the water pump. If you give it a good quick whack, it should break free. The serpentine belt should hold it enough to do the job. I just changed my Fan Clutch and that is how I took it off. I learned it from a radiator shop that rebuilt my DI Radiator. Phil
