The Great Head Gasket Adventure
The theory is the belt will hold the pulley tight enough that a quick blow will loosen the nut without holding anything. Like I said above I've never got that to work. So you will most likely need to use a fan holder or rig something up to hold the pulley.

Go rent fan wrench from your local auto parts store. The Ford one works make sure it is 36mm. Cut a piece of wood like you would a door stop and jam it between the fan pulley and the crank pulley, this will hold the fan in place. I know this because I have don't it more than once.
Ah poop. I already took the serpentine belt off. oops... I assume that If I put a strap wrench or something similiar on it that it will work just as well.
good tip - thank you.
Wait, the fan is reverse threaded so I bump it to the LEFT correct? Towards the passenger side headlight.
Anybody got a good source for the IM gasket, valve cover gaskets and, uh, what other gaskets will I need? NOTE: I am changing the water pump while I have the fan out, I dont know if it has a gasket on it or not.
Next question: When I removed the valve covers I noticed that everything in there is covered with sticky, tar like burnt oil; presumably from the oil getting too hot when the engine overheated. What is the best way to get that old oil off of there before reassembly? Soaking it in degreaser seems inadequate unless someone knows an industrial solevent or something. I am assuming that I can just powerwash the valve covers with the rest of the engine.
thanks again guys.

Yes there is a gasket between the water pump and front cover. Generally, the gasket comes with the new water pump. Any of the auto parts places should be able to get the gaskets you need. They may have to order them but they should be able to get them. CarQuest is a good source for hard to find parts through their Worldpac system.
The auto parts stores should also carry solvent to clean your parts.

Very true about WorldPac. I think almost everything I have purchased for maintenance and repairs on my Landie has been through WorldPac, other than plugs, belt, and super common items. I was able to get the stupid plastic oil separator through them next day, no freight, and cheaper than AB wholesale (comparing WorldPac wholesale to AB wholesale).
You really need to call that friend of yours. I'm not saying that to sound like a huge jerk, but I'm concerned that you might do some damage...
