Bah. So Grom shows up. Special tool for getting stereo out of dashboard turns up.

Plug doesn't fit the back of the stereo.

Mine is base model. But id thought that all LR units might have as the same connections.

And Grom sent the kit for Discoverys 99-05. No mention of stereo model.

Anyone know if there is an adapter I can get from Grom? Before I enter into their whole support thing.

Does my head unit even support cd changer, which is the port it uses?

I do have a spare block of connections, just the wrong shape.

Disappointing.

Edit. So Grom only make cables to fit the Alpine units. Which mine isn't.
The question is, with my el cheapo unit is that spare line of connectors able to connect to the Grom, or have I bought a pointless thing that needs returning?

Can I splice and dice it?

The reason it only goes with units that have the Alpine units is because those units also had the CD Changer. The Grom unit actually hooks up to the CD Changer input.

Not sure if the standard Units have any Source inputs. I will try to check the RAVEs tomorrow.

I don't think it would be hard to find an alpine unit at a junkyard or on ebay. Just switch that out while you are at it. You could inspect and make sure the other connections are the same.

Didn't all models with the Alpine unit also have the external Amp and "sub" on the tailgate door?

Looks like my .8% of doubt was the winner, sorry about that.

It is my understanding that the low end stereo had the amp built in. As mentioned above I believe the Alpine had and external amp for the system and another for the door sub.

I think it would be a pain to upgrade to the Alpine, but maybe someone that has more experience will shed some light on the subject.

Checking the RAVE I only see details for the base model radio cassette. Not CD version.

Also dont see any mention of my Visteon unit. No pin diagrams for it.

I have a ticket open with Grom.

Checking EBay I only see cassette units for sale. And the cd versions are $350 and seem over size for my slot.

Looks like I might be needing an alternative blue tooth device.

Thanks.

I can't speak to the amp being present in all vehicles or not, but if you need an Alpine head unit, I have one from an 04 if you're interested.

I think visteon is the same as Becker and rebadged or borrowed Sony technology. I haven't seen a pin out for one, but I'd bet there is some Sony cd changer from the early 2000s that can interface to that radio with a plug swap. Doubtful that there is a Bluetooth adapter for one, maybe grom knows more. Mercedes used similar head units

If you can find a way to interface a CD Changer, then chances are you can wire in the Grom.

Official word from Grom is that is doesnt work with my CD player.

The spare connector slot is for external amplifier.

I'm confused by physical stereo size. Mine is a standard unit size. what I remember from when i first started buying vehicles. Since then car makers started adding different sized stereo units. Seems Land Rover also did this as some are available and are bigger than mine (looking on Ebay). Does that mean some people have different size slots in the dash? Kinda odd?

Im headed away from home for a week or so on Thursday, so will probably just return the unit for a refund before then and revisit the Blue tooth idea later on.

Unless anyone has a single CD cheapo head unit that works with the Grom unit I bought.

(Thanks for the offer of your cassette version Racer)
