Default Harmonic balancer question

Disco is in the shop for front engine oil leak. Mechanic called me today and said the harmonic balancer will eventually fail. New one $500. Ouch!!! No extra labor, should I replace it or wait? Rebuild it?

Check this out from Miami British; LAND ROVER CRANKSHAFT PULLEY DISCOVERY 2 II RANGE P38 LHG000060 USED | Miami British Corp. got to be worth thinking about. New one from Atlantic British not cheap Crankshaft Pulley / Harmonic Damper (Genuine Part # LHG000060 ) - Land Rover ancillary components from Atlantic British.

If it is on its way out then you should think about getting it done unless you want to do it yourself. Hardest part is getting the pulley nut off the crankshaft and tightening it back to 340 lbf. ft and hold the crank with a crank locking tool.

I have plenty of good, used pulleys with their damper for a fraction of the cost of a new one. Let me know if I can be of help to you. I'm sure I can save you some money!

Awesome thanks for the help, I inspected it myself today. Shaft looks good it's just the rubber damper is starting to deteriorate some.

ummm...they will all eventually fail...what does your 'mechanic' mean....is the rubber almost all gone? or a few small cracks like we all have?

That's Erik at Lucky8. Should be able to check their website or call them. Not sure if he still frequents the forums or not.
